Federal No Lead Compliance

Reducing Lead in Drinking Water

Federal legislation known as Federal Public Law 111-380 or the "Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act" was signed into law in 2011 and eliminates the sale or installation of plumbing fixtures (drinking water pipes, pipe fittings and plumbing fixtures) with a wetted surface area containing more than a weighted average of 0.25% lead.

National requirements allow for standard leaded brass to be installed up until January 4, 2014. However, these products will be non-compliant and obsolete as of January 4, 2014 for use within potable drinking water plumbing systems.

Products exempted from the no lead law are those used exclusively for nonpotable services such as manufacturing, industrial processing, irrigation, outdoor watering, radiant heating or any other uses where the water is not intended for human consumption.

Sioux Chief's No Lead and Standard Brass Product Availability and PEX Fitting Options

Sioux Chief no longer builds stock or produces leaded brass for F1807, F1960, F2080 or sweat fittings that fall under the necessary federal mandates. Sioux Chief will not accept returns of these phasing-out standard brass fittings after December 31, 2012.

Sioux Chief will keep a list of fittings that will be transitioning to no lead material at This list will be kept up-to-date with current stock status of each fitting (obsolete vs. in-stock) as we transition to no lead inventory.

Sioux Chief has made the investment in no lead brass inventory for the majority of our current products. This inventory is currently available in various alloys including no lead compliant and dezincification resistant C69300 material.

F1807 PEX, F1960 PEX and F2080 PEX are offered under the PowerPEX™ brand as fully compliant and listed standard brass (traditional 360 and 377 brass fittings) as well as the above-mentioned no lead and dezincification resistant brass. Sioux Chief's F1807 line of fittings is also offered in copper and remains an economical and perfect solution to no lead and dezincification issues.

All Sioux Chief no lead compliant PEX products, F2159 poly alloy fittings and F1807 copper fittings already meet the above national mandates for Jan. 4, 2014. Sioux Chief's current listed no lead inventory, copper stub outs, copper PEX F1807 fittings and the majority of our preformed copper (PFC) solutions are naturally no lead, are not prone to dezincification and offer natural anti-microbial properties. For those PFC items that are within the scope of federal mandates and which currently contain leaded brass, Sioux Chief will fully transition to compliant product by the Jan 4, 2014 date.
